Community gynaecology is an important part of our practice. We primarily deal with women’s health and issues and we take our responsibility towards the community very seriously. We have, therefore, launched a few health awareness programmes, as follows.
Cervical carcinoma awareness initiative (CCAI)
This is a unique health awareness programme for the masses. Under this programme, women are educated about cervical cancer, which is the most common cancer seen in Indian women. It can be prevented up to an extent if diagnosed in early stages using the VIA or pap smear methods. Primary prevention can be done using vaccination.
VIA stands for visual inspection of cervix (uterus mouth) after applying dilute acetic acid. This means just an internal examination. There is no pain and no extra expense. Pap smear is an age old method which today is one the main reasons for reduction of cervical cancer in the west.
Diabetes in Pregnancy Education (DIPE)
Diabetes, whether preexisting or Gestational (diagnosed 1st time in pregnancy), is a major health hazard during pregnancy as it affects both the mother and the baby developing in the womb, thus affecting future generation also. Women with Diabetes in pregnancy have high risk for developing diabetes in children with future life. Regular check-ups are a necessary requirement.
“Diabetes runs in the family, so one has to take steps to prevent it.” Good diet and regular exercise greatly reduce the chances of a person with IGT developing diabetes. Lifestyle intervention in diet, exercise, and behaviour modification is an integral part of successfully managing this problem. By eating less fat and fewer calories and exercising for a total of 150 minutes a week can do wonders. Awareness & education is must for this type of disease where the patient is an active partner in the treatment process; society plays a bigger role in prevention.
WE ARE GOING TO START AN EDUCATIVE PROGRAMME UNDER THIS BANNER VIA NEWS PAPERS AND DIRECT APPROACH TO COMMUNITY.
Contraception Awareness Programme (CAP)
“Contraception – Avoid Conception” is a field which is full of myths. This is one of the most important social areas which needs a lot of work. It pains us gravely when an educated couple arrive seeking an abortion for the 1st unwanted pregnancy. Couples do not think about dangerous side-effects of unnecessary abortions but always have concerns about side-effects of contraceptive method.
There is, therefore, a large unmet need of awareness about various contraceptive methods available to people today. Contraception is one of the biggest gifts of medical science to mankind, especially to women, and it is one of the major reasons today for women’s independence and longevity.
The CAP programme is an initiative is to spread awareness among the society for the importance of contraception and help people make an informed decision, selecting the method that is best for them.
